Years and months leading up to the elections we heard former supporters of the ruling DLP severing ties with the DLP administration for numerous reasons ranging from corruption to government incompetence. We even witness government minister Ambrose George fired twice by deceased PM Pierre Charles and once by current PM Roosevelt Skerrit. We heard from leading DLP activists Saverin McKenzie, Athie Martin, Gabriel Christian, and Samuel Christian and in recent times Floyd Capitoleh. All of these gentlemen were singing the same song; The DLP administration led by Roosevelt Skerrit was corrupt to the core and it was clear to them that they were in office to enrich themselves. The evidence is there to support it. Police officers complain publicly about drug overseers who cavort with government officers. Government cronies who have no visible means of income host parties and boast of making their first million. Young Dominican girls, still flush with the innocence of youth, join the ranks of defiled womanhood as they are recruited and later arrested overseas as drug mules. A government minister transports counterfeit money to Cuba and gives no explanation where the money came from. On weekends, prostitutes and parl reps mingle at a “respectable” nightclub while misguided Dominican women on other nights grope half-naked male strippers and slip their hard earned dollars into filthy thongs. A pastor who flaunts his friendship with the Prime Minister demands $50,000 from his congregation to celebrate his fiftieth birthday! Welcome to the new Dominica!

Listening to a re-broadcast of the address of the President of Dominica to the opening session of Parliament on Friday 31st July 2009, I was disappointed by His Excellency’s response to citizens’ requests for clarity and action to address the recent corruption allegations against the Government of the day. My reaction was that something was missing, but willing to give him the benefit of the doubt I procured a copy of his speech and followed his advice therein to read his former speeches posted on his website, in the hope that I might have missed some redeeming words. None were present. Rather, the President pointed to the supposed constitutional hand-tying that had severely limited the powers of our Head of State. Notwithstanding he also reiterated his right to be consulted, to encourage, and even more importantly to warn. My interpretation was that the President was constitutionally unable to exercise the moral authority that much .........
